Gender-sensitive health in shift and production operations.

Sleep problems in shift-based operations: a workplace health issue that is still insufficiently solved
Ein BGM-Thema, das bisher unzureichend gelöst ist
Working nights means working against your own rhythm. In midlife, hormonal changes add to this – and traditional workplace health offerings often do not reach the shift.
30–45 %
of the world's population report sleep problems – significantly more often in shift work.
29 %
of all employed people work in shift or production roles – with a high share among 40- to 65-year-olds.
40–60 %
of women going through menopause have sleep problems – insomnia occurs twice as often as in men.
Strain
Night work shifts the day-night rhythm. In midlife, hormonal changes add to this.
Traditional workplace health falls short
No device access at work, no personalization, no scientific evidence.
What follows
Sick days (sick leave), productivity losses, loss of skilled workers.

Frequently asked questions about hermaid.SHFT
hermaid.SHFT is a research project by hermaid and Charité Berlin (running until the end of 2027): a digital program to improve sleep in shift work. It combines three focus areas: sleep, shift work and hormonal changes in midlife – with dedicated modules for women in perimenopause and menopause and for men in andropause. The platform is available around the clock, anonymous and usable without IT integration.
hermaid is a digital health platform by Her-Medical-Aid GmbH in Wildau for hormonal health and prevention. The application is CE-certified as a Class I medical device under MDR 2017/745.
Together with the gender research team at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Gender Research in Medicine), hermaid studies the connection between hormonal change, working conditions and sleep quality. Charité accompanies hermaid.SHFT scientifically – from the pilot to the controlled study.
The project runs from April 2026 to the end of 2027. Cooperation companies join from Q4/2026. The pilot study in live shift operations is planned for January to June 2027, followed by evaluation and transfer of the results.
Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Gender Research in Medicine) accompanies SHFT in two steps: in the pilot, the program, questionnaires and processes are developed and tested together with participants and managers (four weeks of use, questionnaires and focus groups). This is followed by a cluster-randomized controlled trial with a waitlist control group that examines effectiveness. Participants use hermaid.SHFT for twelve weeks.
Charité evaluates the data, derives recommendations for action and publishes the results scientifically. For companies, this produces a gender-sensitive action guide for shift work, shift schedule recommendations and a sleep prevention course – complemented by audio formats and two additional languages.
Night work shifts the day-night rhythm, and sleep problems are significantly more common in shift work. In midlife, hormonal changes add to this and can make sleep even harder. That is why SHFT addresses this phase specifically – with dedicated modules for women in perimenopause and menopause and for men in andropause. The Charité study explicitly examines gender differences and care gaps in sleep disorders in shift work.
Yes. hermaid.SHFT is CE-certified as a Class I medical device under MDR 2017/745. This means the application undergoes a regulated conformity assessment and is subject to medical device requirements for safety and quality – unlike many pure wellness or lifestyle apps.
All data is end-to-end encrypted and hosted in Germany or the EU. hermaid never sells data to third parties. Companies have no access to individual health data.
hermaid.SHFT is funded by the employer as a workplace health management (BGM) measure; there are no direct costs for your employees. You will receive the price individually on request – feel free to contact us.
All companies with employees in shift or production work – regardless of company size. Cooperation companies join from Q4/2026.
After the intro call and onboarding of your company – involving your company representatives and occupational physicians – participants, employees and managers, are informed and give consent. A baseline questionnaire follows, then random assignment to the program group or the waitlist group. The program group uses hermaid.SHFT for twelve weeks. Afterwards, both groups complete a final questionnaire, and then the waitlist group starts as well.
Participants use hermaid.SHFT independently in the app for twelve weeks. Before and after use, they complete questionnaires designed to take a maximum of 30 minutes. Reading the study information and giving consent takes another 20 minutes at most.
Managers complete at least one questionnaire on structural aspects of their department – for example, on what is already being done to design work in a gender-sensitive way. Short interviews or a focus group are possible in addition.
There is no minimum number per company. What matters: every interested person in your company must be allowed to take part. How many participants the study needs overall is determined statistically by Charité on the basis of the pilot.
Your company gets a platform that is available around the clock and usable without IT integration, plus concrete operational insights: comparing aggregated sleep data with your shift schedules yields adjustment proposals, for example on rotation direction or break arrangements, with implementation in the workplace supported. At the end of the project there is an action guide for shift work and recommendations for companies; the goal of the study is proof of effectiveness.
Besides hermaid and Charité, data collection also involves occupational physicians, occupational safety specialists and company representatives – a legal requirement under § 20b SGB V.
No. Your company has no access to individual health data. For the operational insights – such as proposals on rotation direction or break arrangements – only aggregated sleep data is compared with your existing shift schedules. Hosting is in Germany or the EU.
That depends on how it is set up in your company. Since hermaid.SHFT does not transmit any personal performance or health data to the employer, we are happy to support you with information material for the conversation with the works council.
You do not pay anything directly: your employer covers the costs as a workplace health management (BGM) measure. This is how it works: 1. You are interested in SHFT. 2. You talk to your employer, for example HR or the works council. 3. We contact your employer and clarify the details. 4. Your employer agrees – and you get access to the app.
Great that you are interested! You have three options: 1. Suggest SHFT to your employer – talk to HR or the works council and mention that it is a health program designed specifically for shift workers. 2. We help you: write to eva@hermaid.me with your company's name and your contact person (HR or works council, if known). We approach your employer directly – without obligation for you. 3. Waitlist: sign up for our waitlist. We will notify you as soon as your employer is on board or other options become available.
As soon as your employer works with SHFT, you receive a link to the app from your HR department – or you can sign up directly in the app. You only need your email address. After signing up, you fill in a short questionnaire, and then you get started.
On average 10–20 minutes per week for the learning module. Sleep tracking takes only seconds per day. You set your own pace – even during your shift work.
The core program lasts 12 weeks. You can set the pace yourself – some people are faster, others take more time. Afterwards you have access to maintenance and deepening modules.
Yes, absolutely. You can pause or end the program at any time – without obligations and without a notice period. You always stay in control.
No. SHFT also works without a wearable – you can track your sleep manually. A wearable (e.g. Apple Watch, Garmin or Oura Ring) can improve the results but is optional.
Yes, especially for you! SHFT has dedicated modules for women in perimenopause and menopause as well as for men in andropause. Hormonal changes make sleep in shift work considerably harder – there are special modules for exactly that.
Yes. SHFT can be used alongside medication. Discuss it with your doctor if you regularly take sleeping medication. SHFT does not replace medical advice but complements it.
No. Your employer has no access to individual health data. At most, they can receive aggregated evaluations, for example for proposals on shift schedules. Your personal data stays private.
Your data stays safe and encrypted. You keep access to the app and your profile. You can have your data deleted at any time – write to support@hermaid.me. After your request, it is removed from all systems within 30 days.
