Every woman experiences menopause differently

Stubborn clichés about menopause still persist today – the image of the moody or "old" woman, for example. These stereotypes don't reflect reality: menopause is a natural part of life and no reason to hide symptoms or feel ashamed of them. Every woman's body changes during this time, but how varies widely. About a third of women get through menopause comparatively well.

What is menopause?

Every woman is born with a fixed reserve of egg cells that diminishes over the years. As this reserve shrinks, ovarian function changes too. This marks the beginning of the transition into a new stage of life, which unfolds in several steps. Menopause happens because the ovaries gradually become less active over the course of life.
A natural transition – not a cause for concern. As ovarian function declines, the interplay of hormones in the body changes – a process that unfolds not overnight, but over years. About a third of women get through menopause comparatively well, while others notice much more. Women with pronounced symptoms find well-founded guidance in the hermaid app (download.hermaid.me) and can clarify open questions directly with a doctor.

You don't have to just "push through" any of this – modern medicine today offers many ways to make this stage of life easier.

The stages of the transition

The STRAW classification is a widely used framework for categorizing the stages of menopause. It divides a woman's reproductive life into three main stages: before, during, and after menopause – from the reproductive stage through perimenopause to postmenopause.

And which stage are you in?

„Many women aren't taken seriously with their symptoms. It's time for doctors across all specialties to get further training here – hormonal changes affect the whole person, physically and mentally."

What's happening in your body

As the ovaries gradually become less active, the interplay of several hormones changes. Estrogen and progesterone production first declines with noticeable fluctuations before settling at a lower level. At the same time, FSH and LH rise – two hormones produced in the brain that are meant to stimulate the ovaries to produce hormones. The body essentially tries to compensate, but since the ovaries become less responsive to these signals over time, estrogen and progesterone levels keep declining anyway.

Important to know

Early symptoms of menopause can sometimes appear as early as your 40s, even if your period is still regular. If you're unsure whether a symptom is related to menopause, get medical advice – other causes, such as an underactive thyroid, may also be possible. This list of symptoms isn't a prediction of what will inevitably happen to you; it's simply meant to help you make sense of what you might be feeling right now.
Once your body has adjusted to the new hormone levels, many symptoms tend to ease again.

Good news: you don't have to just "push through" any of this. Modern medicine today offers many ways to make this stage of life easier:
– If you're unsure, always talk to your doctor
– Use the hermaid app to document and make sense of your symptoms
– Book a 30-minute online appointment through the app if needed
– Get well-founded information instead of relying on clichés
Important note

All content on this page was developed together with doctors and health coaches, is professionally grounded, and practice-oriented. It complements medical advice from your doctor, but doesn't replace it.

If you have symptoms or feel unsure:
– Talk to your doctor
– Keep a symptom diary in the hermaid app
– Note down medications and pre-existing conditions
– Collect your questions for your next doctor's appointment
